A properly functioning digestive system is the foundation of a healthy body, and digestive dysfunction often underlies many chronic health problems. You simply can’t be at your best if your body can’t absorb and process the foods you eat.

The prevalence of processed, low-quality food in our diets, along with our habits of eating foods that we didn’t prepare (restaurant food, etc), leave our digestive systems vulnerable to problems. Many people suffer from these issues.

Symptoms of digestive dysfunction include bloating, nausea, gas, gurgling, diarrhea and constipation. They may be constant symptoms or they may come and go. Some patients have lived with these symptoms for so long that they start to think troubled digestion is normal.

Many patients come to me for help with these problems after they’ve undergone other treatment. They’ve been told they have IBS, Acid Reflux, heartburn, etc. Many have tried various medications, but the problems persist.

Investigating and naturally correcting digestive dysfunction requires patience and commitment. Patients who are willing to undertake the effort are often glad they did. To create a natural Treatment Program for digestive dysfunction, we’ll assess the following sources of digestive trouble.

Food intolerances

Many patients have food intolerances that they are not aware of. Common ones include soy, dairy, and wheat. Consuming foods that your body doesn’t like often damages the delicate lining of the digestive system. A damaged intestinal lining cannot properly absorb foods, and this frequently leads to a wide ranges of symptoms. Based on your health history and a simple lab test that you can complete at home, we’ll determine if certain foods may be damaging your digestion.

Dysbiosis

Poor digestion is also a result of dysbiosis, an imbalance in the healthy organisms that inhabit the intestinal tract. These healthy organisms are often called "gut flora." Dysbiosis can be caused by parasitic infections, bacterial overgrowth, or invasive yeast (often referred to as Candida). Hidden or subclinical inflammatory conditions can also interfere with digestion and cause dysbiosis. 'Subclinical' refers to problems that are frequently not detected because they do not cause obvious symptoms.

Latent infections

Patients with chronic digestive problems sometimes have hidden infections. These infections can vary in severity over time, and are often missed by standard laboratory tests. This infections can cause wide ranging problems that destroy a person’s sense of well being. If your history indicates that stool testing is appropriate, we will order those tests for you. If hidden infections are discovered, you may be referred to medical doctor for antibiotics. Herbal support programs may also help your body fight infections naturally.

To correct digestive problems naturally, we’ll work sequentially by looking at food intolerances, rebalancing the gut flora, and then (if needed) screen for pathogens. Sometimes, depending on your particular circumstances, we may change the sequence. But to truly allow your digestive system to heal itself naturally, all three areas need to be assessed. This is not a quick-fix approach, but it’s one that tends to last. A Natural Treatment Program for Digestive Dysfunction is often a life-changing endeavor, so if you’ve been dealing with digestive problems, we’d like the opportunity to help you.
