Wellness/Prevention: Protect Yourself from the Sun to Prevent Skin Cancer. The American Academy of Dermatology reports that many Americans don’t take proper precautions to protect themselves from the sun. To reduce the risk for skin cancer, the academy recommends the following: seek shade when the sun’s rays are the strongest, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.; wear sun-protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses; use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with a sun-protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher on all skin not covered by clothing. American Academy of Dermatology, April 2020

Exercise: Walking Offers Many Health Benefits. Walking is a great weight-bearing exercise associated with the following benefits: increased cardiovascular and pulmonary fitness; reduced risk of heart disease and stroke; improved management of conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, joint and muscular pain or stiffness, and diabetes; stronger bones; improved balance; increased muscle strength and endurance, and reduced body fat. Department of Health & Human Services (Australia), May 2020

Chiropractic: Conservative Care Can Reduce Need for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Surgery. Among a group of 150 patients on a waiting list for carpal tunnel release surgery, researchers observed that participants who performed tendon gliding exercises for six weeks were about 25% more likely to cancel their procedure within the following six months. Doctors of chiropractic often incorporate tendon gliding exercises in their treatment recommendations for carpal tunnel syndrome patients in addition to nutritional recommendations and manual therapies to relieve pressure on the median nerve at the wrist and elsewhere along its course. The 50 US State Chiropractic Boards, including the Colorado Chiropractic Board of Examiners (which falls under the control of the State of Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies) are in agreement that chiropractors are essential healthcare workers and therefore should remain open.

Barring a specific order from Governor Polis stating that chiropractic offices should close, we will stay open. We will continue to follow all safety and social distancing procedures that we’ve had in place for weeks now.

(Note: The recent order by Governor Polis that suspended elective procedures applies to surgical procedures or other such procedures that require ventilators, anesthesia machines, and personal protective equipment. This is to preserve such equipment for critical care. Since none of our procedures requires any of this equipment, this ruling does not relate to what we do in our office.)

Here is today’s 1-Page Health News:

Diet: Foods That Raise/Lower Diabetes Risk. The current research notes that a diet rich in whole grains, lean dairy, fish, nuts, and fresh vegetables and fruit is associated with a reduced risk for type 2 diabetes. On the other hand, a diet featuring high amounts of red and processed meat, refined grains, and sugar-sweetened beverages is linked to an elevated diabetes risk. National Institute of Public Health (Pakistan), December 2019

Exercise: Exercising in Very Cold Weather May Harm Lungs. Researchers from the University of Alberta warn that lung function can worsen over time when they are exposed to cold weather, especially during exercise. Experts advise that if you work out in the cold, it’s a good idea to do the following: perform an indoor warm-up to help dilate the lungs, reduce your exercise intensity to allow the lungs more time to warm and humidify the air, and shield your mouth from the cold air during exercise. University of Alberta, January 2020

Chiropractic: Spinal Pain and TMD. Using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Review and Assessment database, researchers report that nearly half (48%) of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) patients also have spinal pain. Additionally, the more severe a patient’s TMD symptoms, the more likely they were to also have neck pain or back pain. Past research has demonstrated that dysfunction in the cervical spine can cause or contribute to TMD, and treatment to improve function in the upper spine, such as chiropractic care, can reduce jaw pain and associated disability. BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, December 2019

Mental Attitude: Peppermint and Dementia Risk. Among a group of 948 seniors, researchers observed that those unable to smell peppermint and other strong odors were more likely to develop dementia in the following five years. Neuroepidemiology, January 2020

Wellness/Prevention: Losing Tongue Fat May Ease Sleep Apnea. In a study involving 67 obese patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who participated in a weight loss program, researchers found that a reduction of weight in the tongue contributed to about 30% of the benefit in OSA improvement associated with weight loss. Health Alert: Marriage Benefits the Heart. An analysis of data concerning over 3.5 million adults found that marriage is associated with a reduced risk for vascular disease, coronary artery disease, aneurisms, and other heart-related conditions. New York University December 2019

Diet: Eat Five Servings of Fruits and Veggies a Day! A review of data from 61 published studies concluded that consuming at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day is associated with higher optimism and self-efficacy, as well as reduced psychological distress, ambiguity, and depressive symptoms. Nutrients, January 2020

Exercise: Is Steady State Training for You? Steady-state training (SST) involves maintaining your heart rate below your target maximum for an extended period of time and is great for strengthening the heart because it maintains a steady state of aerobic output which forces the body to become efficient at pumping oxygenated blood through the body. Constant steady-state training also helps the body burn fat for fuel, and compared with high-intensity training, there is a lower risk for acute injury. The downside to SST is that there is a higher risk for stress or repetitive injury because you are doing the same thing for an extended period of time and it takes longer to see results. American Council on Exercise, January 2020

Chiropractic: Pelvic Alignment and Lumbar Spine Pathologies. When compared with individuals without a history of back pain, patients with lumbar degenerative disk disease, spondylolisthesis, and failed back surgery syndrome are more likely to exhibit abnormal spino-pelvic alignment. Doctors of chiropractic are trained to improve spinal alignment abnormalities with a treatment approach that may include a combination of manipulation, mobilization, and specific exercises. Journal of Craniovertebral Junction & Spine, November 2019

Mental Attitude: Dementia Risk Can Be Reduced in a Short Time. Using data from South Korea’s National Health Screening Program, researchers report that seniors who brought their blood sugar and blood pressure readings to normal levels over a five-year time frame reduced their risk for dementia by about 12%. Journal of Clinical Medicine, January 2020

Wellness/Prevention: Prepare Your Car for Winter Safety. Getting stranded in your car during winter storms and cold temperatures can be dangerous. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers the following suggestions to prepare your vehicle for cold weather: service the radiator; check fluid levels; check the tread on all tires or replace tires with ones meant for all weather or snow; keep your gas tank full to avoid ice in the tank and fuel lines; and use a wintertime formula in your windshield washer. The CDC adds that you should have a winter emergency kit in your vehicle that includes blankets, food and water, a compass and maps, a first-aid kit, plastic bags, and a flashlight.
